Working with stone

Stone article

The first of the Stone articles. This is a rough guide to classifying the types of stone we use for mosaics according to it's hardness/workability.

If you want to learn a little more about stone and how it's (correctly!) classified then this is a good site. http://www.geologyrocks.co.uk/
There is a lot of information there and also a forum to ask questions.

Using a wet saw to cut stone

If you're thinking of investing in a wet saw to cut your stone watch out for this. There is a sludge that collects in the water reservoir and normally with an ordinary tilers work it doesn't build up too much. If you're cutting the amount you need for mosaic work then you need to watch how much is there.
It can build up enough (as you can see from the state of the saw) that you will suddenly get what you think is a water spray in the air. This is dry marble dust and is very nasty stuff for your lungs.

What's in a name?

If you go around tile merchants and look at all the different stones you will notice that some colours have different names in different shops. This generally is down to the suppliers wanting to keep the shop owners just ordering from them.
For instance, the stone used in reproduction Roman mosaics tends to be Botticino. Botticino is the name that a quarryman will know that stone by. Now if the supplier says to the shop, 'here's the Botticino', all it needs is another company to say to the shop owner, 'we've got Botticino and it's cheaper'.

Colour Matching

When I first started this work I always remember being told, always get all the marble you need before you start as if you run out of one colour and you order more the next batch may not match exactly.
Thinking back to all the mosaics I've done over the past 9 years and I've had plenty where I've had different batches of stone of the same colour in a mosaic and I can honestly say I've really not noticed any difference at all.
I can understand if you're working with tiles 300mm x 300mm, then you would see a difference in the shading, but with 8mm - 12mm size tesserae I don't think it makes a difference. Feel free to comment if you disagree.
