Roman Mosaic Reconstructions

When you can't get on with it!

As I was staring at the mosaic on my workbench last night it made me think about what is one of the worse blocks to getting the work done. Two problems are not being totally sure about either the pattern or the colours you're using.

If that happens to you then stop, go back over the pattern and be sure you can clearly see the outline you need.

If your pattern is fine but you're really unsure of the colours to use in a particular section then go to an area of the mosaic that you are sure of and do that. The more areas of the mosaic that you have completed the easier it is to 'see' the finished piece in your minds eye.

New Article

I've just finished writing another article on the different options for making a copy of a Roman mosaic that I consider before starting. This is just a brief overview and I'll add a full piece on each one soon.

Work in Progress

Work in Progress
North African mosaic of a racehorse. 44cm/17" diameter exterior paving slab, 8mm - 12mm marble tesserae.
Not something I'd repeat unless it were a specific commission as I've had to go down to using 5mm tesserae for the details on the feet and the head. Not good as this all adds to the time, although you can go smaller for details such as eyes and other parts of the face it's best to try to be consistant with your sizing.
You should still be able to see the pencil marks where I wrote out the text on the slab but then had to move it all up to be able to fit it in using 10mm tess.

New article, background areas

Another article, it details the importance of paying attention to the background of your mosaic. Click here

Using the Borderline Rule

This is an image of mine that I dug up from years ago which shows 2 triangles, one made using the borderline rule and one without. I'll whizz off something a bit clearer at the weekend but it gives you an idea.

New article, Mistakes when to correct them.

Using square cut mosaic tesserae (tiles)

There's an article posted about using square cut tesserae to make a Roman mosaic as opposed to using tesserae with more irregular edges.

Roman Mosaic Reconstruction at Wroxter

This post relates to the mosaic made for the Roman Villa reconstruction at Wroxeter. Details of the programme are currently on the Channel 4 website here http://www.channel4.com/programmes/rome-wasnt-built-in-a-day

If you’re not in the UK you can’t watch the programmes but you can go on the virtual tour. To see the mosaic click on ‘Triclineum’, click and hold and then move your mouse to move the picture round and you will be able to see some of the mosaic.
