Roman Mosaic Kits

Roman Mosaic Kits now available again

I've made the Roman mosaic kits available again on the page here

I've spent more time cutting so I have built up a stock and I'll be spending time each week cutting to keep this up.

New mosaic completed

Here's the latest mosaic finished. A detail from Piazza Amerina in Sicily.
I learnt a lot from this one which I'll detail in an article soon. It's all marble except for the bright red which is compostie stone. I rarely use this but it would not of been possible to match this with the stone we have available now.

New mosaic kits coming

I've just been given a brilliant idea for the Roman mosaic kits. I will create an empty template (ie with not patterns just the outlines) for a large mosaic which has space for different images say, in the centre and at each corner. There will be space for a border pattern that surrounds each motif.

Then I make a kit for the different border patterns in say, 14cm lengths which will match if you placed then together. The motifs will be either circular or square panels.
This way you can create your own mosaic by choosing different border patterns and motifs and just make the mosaic up a section at a time.

Grasshopper Roman mosaic

New mosaic on the kits page. This is a grasshopper which is taken from a 3rd century AD mosaic in Rome.
I've taken the pattern exactly as the original but just changed some of the colours. Below is an image of the original.

It's 21.5cm x 25cm, £15.00 plus postage.

New prices for overseas customers

To keep up with the demand from overseas customers I've now priced up the kits for airmail.
The keep the costs down I only put in the essentials, the tiles, the pattern, copy paper and instructions. Everything else such as baseboard, glue etc you should be able to easily get in your own country.
The prices of the kits themselves have been reduced to take this into account.
You'll find them here

Roman mosaic kits

I've added another 2 Roman mosaic kits now, the Head of a Sea Horse from the baths at Ostia and Jericho, a detail from the 6th century AD mosaic map of the Holy Land which was found in Jordan.
You can find them on the Shop page and go to Mosaic Kits on the drop down bar. They are both put together using the 5mm tesserae so the only tools you need to get are a pair of nippers. These are for sale through the Shop too.

Mosaic kits

I've added details for the Little Bird mosaic on the Mosaic Kits page and I've started on another 3 kits, a bird, a grasshopper and a large horses head. I make each of these to check the pattern is correct and then work out what the kits need. The patterns are taken from my finished version.
The the pattern and details of each mosaic remain the same as the originals but there are aeas that I need to make slight adjustments to ensure that these are 'doable' by complete beginners.
There are some piece for piece kits coming out for the portraits, with these though I have to get a good supply of quite a number of other colours.
