Here is an image of the completed Opus Sectile griffin. As I said in an earlier post this is just an experimental panel. The full one is being started next week, when finished it will go on display at a tile merchants here. Cutting the marble to a 5mm thickness is no problem, shaping does need to be done with the electric tile saw. In medievil times a bow saw with iron wire was used (and still sometimes is) to cut the shapes for Pietra Dura a very fine marble inlay for furnture. It seems entirely reasonable for the same type of thing to be used by the ancients for cutting the sectile panels. |
