Just finished the Advanced course so I'll be posting up some photos and notes from it later on today. It was a very interesting few days and marking out the geometric mosaics was fascinating, large patterns but both were seen to be variations on the same layout.

I'm away teaching for the next 4 days so I'll update the website when I finish on Monday. There are more patterns being added to the manual and I've more being printed now. The courses will increase in price from Monday and I'll be talking obout what's happening for the rest of the year. My apologies for those who have added coments to the blog but for some reason I can't put a reply to them through the Admin page so I'll try and sort out what has gone wrong there. Have a great holiday weekend if you're not working!

I've not updated for a while so I have a whole stack of things to go on the website. There are a couple of 'work in progress' articles and more general updates to go on. Mosaic Kits/Tesserae sales I've revamped the website, a lot of the different workshops have been removed and I've put the mosaic kits and tesserae sales on hold until I can build up a stock as I need to ensure that people aren't having to wait too long before they get sent out. If you are looking to order anything then just drop me a line and I can give you an estimate about how long it will be. |

There is another page in the 'Articles' section entitled Stone. Nothing in there yet but I will post articles on aspects of stone use both now and in the ancient world.

I've started a database on how to set out Roman mosaic patterns. This will include geometric and decorative ones formatted in the same way as the Wave pattern and the double strand guilloche on here. It will be done over 3 years and I hope to cover the most commmonly seen. When I make it available there will be a nominal payment for full access online and this will be available in about 3 months time. There have been a number of very good studies of how the the patterns were worked out in Roman mosaic floors but what sometimes looks good on paper can be a real headache to translate into a physical mosaic. |

Demonstration Roman mosaic for sale, I'm redoing this piece so I'm offering this one out at a reduced price. £25.00 plus £8.50 shipping within mainland UK This is a copy from an original Roman mosaic (50cm x 50cm) found in Villa Arianna in Italy. Sections of the tesserae have come away revealing the guidelines set by the original mosaicists. Also it has squares and rectangles of mosaic which when put in their correct places complete the mosaic. This works very well with children who get the opportunity to 'make' a mosaic themselves. |

I've added another house number and more details to the page here and also added a page for a load of coasters and dinner place mats that I'm doing here. I didn't think I'd be doing those but I'm really surprised how much I get out of it plus it's actually a lot of fun to mess about in the workshop in the evenings trying to work out patterns and images for such small pieces. OK it's not authentically 'Roman' but it's a neat way to make small pieces. Think about it, you've a coaster which gives you a working size of 10cm x 10cm. |

I've started on some mosaics that are suitable for gardens. Using conventional paving slabs I'm setting mosaics onto them. They work very well as a way of having a Roman mosaic as a feature without the difficulty of setting up a large base for it to go on. There is only one image so far but I'll post more up as the sections are done.

I'm suspending the sales of the kits and supplies excepting tools as I need to catch up and build up the stocks. Unfortunately I'm a 1 man business and I've been caught out a few times where any unexpected delays or things needing replacing after problems with the post have had a real knock on effect. I'll post the availability of the items only when I have a reasonable stock level so that I can ensure any delays are minimised.
