Garden Exterior Mosaics

Racehorse mosaic

Here's the latest garden mosaic, a copy of a Roman mosaic from North Africa dating to 3rd century AD. I've been meaning to do this one for a while, the problem was I had to resize it to be able to fit it onto the paving slab (44cm diameter) and this meant for some of the details on the head and legs I had to go down to cutting 5mm tesserae. This does mean that the work takes longer.
I've noticed that a lot of roman mosaic of horses and gladiators are quite detailed and so are either larger in size of are set using quite small tesserae.

New exterior mosaic added

I've just completed another exterior Roman mosaic. This pattern is classified as 'Swastika-peltae with polychrome knot'. I just refer to it as knot and whirly spikes!

Work in progress

Here's an image of a mosaic I have in progress at the moment. 5mm thick marble tesserae on a paving slab.
