ROMAN MOSAIC WORKSHOPS - Create a Piece of History

Little Bird

Other materials needed:
Baseboard (this can be wood, plywood, cement fibre board, most tile boards, cement slab).
Glue, one suitable for stone but most household ones work ok.
Nippers, standard tile nippers.

Suggested working method:
1.The gaps need to be 1mm – 2mm between tiles, on the curves this will be slightly larger but try not to let the gaps get too big.

2. Start with the black, get your main outline.

3.Fill in the other colours, the picture shows my colour choice but you can use any combination you like. Tip: yellow against the background white doesn’t go very well as the yellow is too light.

4. To make this a copy of a Roman mosaic as opposed to a piece of modern art make sure you have the borderline of white around the bird. Do this outline now before filling in any more of the background.

5.Fill in the background using horizontal lines.

Tips: You have the pattern to follow, but these are just guidelines. Do not think you need to follow these exactly. You need to create your own mosaic, it doesn’t matter if your tiles (tesserae) go over a line, you can always compensate with the next line, make that one a little larger.
