It's all about principles! Learn the correct principles and you should be able to apply them to any Roman mosaic.
Day 1
A refresh of the methods we will use (Direct Method) and The Rules. There will then be an in depth look at Methods of Work and with a small mosaic I will assess your current work method.
At the end of the day we will begin the planning for the geometric mosaic.
Day 2
Roman Geometric mosaics. How to interpret patterns and the one measurement you need which is essential for any setting out. How to break a pattern down to it's individual components. how to resize these mosaics and how to determine the limits for any pattern. You will learn how to draw out complex patterns by using the easiest possible route. The mosaic you start on will be approximately 40cm either as a square or circle.
Day 3
Roman Figural mosaics. Basic principles of figures, we start with sea creatures, birds and animals before looking at human figures. You will be taught outlines, where you can and can't use smaller tesserae for details and how to avoid the 'toothpaste effect'!The mosaic started on this day will be a human figure approximately 50cm x 35cm.
Day 4
Morning is work on either the geometric piece, if not finished or the figural mosaic. The afternoon is reviewing the work done and going over the manual. To end you will be given a short introduction to Roman mosaic portrait work. You will then take away a full kit for a piece for piece copy of a Roman portrait (either from Sicily or Zeugma). The tesserae will be in the form of 5mm thick marble rods which can be cut with nippers.
You won't finish all the mosaics so you will leave with everything you need to finish at home. This includes the tesserae, adhesive, grout and wax. You only need a pair of tile nippers which if you don't have your own are available at a reduced price.

‘I was looking for someone prepared to share their knowledge and experience with mosaic, especially at the technical level, rather than someone who would just deliver a course. It was good to find someone willing and able to answer all my questions, as and when they occurred to me. I was unsure what we could get through in 4 days, so I relied on Lawrence to judge what could be done realistically and help choose the subject and size of each piece. It meant that I was able to try 3 major techniques, direct method, reverse and double reverse. Great to see how different the feel of pieces made by the double reverse method could be. I was totally unaware of the difference in texture achievable.
Not only did we manage to juggle 3 pieces made by 3 methods and take them to completion in the time – great organisation - , but we reviewed the method in detail. We covered sourcing materials, tools and Lawrence made recommendations for further reading. It’s given me the confidence to continue to work on my own.
I can warmly recommend Lawrence for his generous approach to teaching and his obvious enthusiasm for his subject.
